Round Mountain Trail
Description:
The
Round Mountain National Trail System consists of the Summit Adventure Trail
(trail leading to the summit of Sheep Mountain) and the Foothills Nature Trail.
Both trails offer interpretive markers along their entire length. Brochures
for the nature trail are available at the beginning of the trail. Because
of their low elevation, these trails offer year-round hiking opportunities.
The summit trail is also suitable for horses.
The
trail begins at the parking area and travels along an old road bed above the
Big Thompson River for a short distance. The summit and nature trails split
after about .2 miles. The nature trail offers an easy two mile walk (round
trip) along an old road with numerous interpretive markers along the way.
The brochure give information about each marker. The summit trail immediately
begins a moderate climb to the south for about .1 miles. It then turns east
and makes a steady climb along the hillside to the southeast. Eleven interpretive
signs are placed at various points along the trail. The trail is lined with
ponderosa pine and douglas fir and parallels the Big Thompson Canyon to the
east. Great views of the canyon and river can be seen from the trail. After
about a mile, the trail leaves the Big Thompson Canyon and travels up along
a side canyon. It makes a moderate climb up a ridge above the side canyon
through scattered ponderosa pine, douglas fir, and brushy areas. It then levels
off and travels along a ledge-like path below large boulders and rock walls
with steep drop offs. The views here can be quite breathtaking.
Once
past the rocky area, the trail descends into the gulch and begins a moderate
climb through dense ground vegetation and scattered ponderosa pines toward
the summit of Sheep Mountain. Great views of Pinewood Reservoir, Carter Lake,
and the eastern plains can be seen along this stretch. At the summit you can
see Longs Peak and Meeker Peak to the west.
There
is very little water along this trail (one small spring or seep). Those taking
pets should carry water for them, especially in the warmer months. This trail
should pose no difficulties for horse travelers. There is one narrow spot
between large rocks with a 2 - 3 foot drop that might be troublesome for green
horses. The trail is well maintained and easy to follow. Overall it is of
moderate difficulty.

Directions:
Take Highway 34 west from Loveland. The trailhead is on
the left side of the road about four miles from the Dam Store. The sign cannot
be seen until you are right on top of it. The entrance to Viestenz-Smith Mountain
Park is on the right just before the trailhead.
