Roaring Creek Trail
Description:
The Roaring Creek Trail
begins from Highway 14 in Poudre Canyon and follows Roaring Creek for 5.25
miles to the Nunn Creek Basin area. The trail climbs about 2,100 feet in this
distance. About half of the climb occurs in the first 1.25 miles as the trail
makes switchbacks up the canyon face. This part of the trail is quite rocky
and could be difficult for some users. Once out of the canyon the climb is
more gradual and offers a pleasant walk through dense lodgepole pine. Roaring
Creek is a fast moving stream with many small waterfalls and cascades, thus
giving rise to its name. The trail meanders up the drainage varying from a
few feet to several hundred yards in distance from the stream. Only a few
small tributary streams need to be crossed. Near its end, the trail follows
the eastern edge of a large meadow.
Near
its beginning, the trail narrows past a large boulder and then crosses a talus
slope. This might be troublesome for some livestock. At about two miles, the
trail passes through a boggy area in an aspen stand. At about four miles the
trail becomes faint near a large rock outcrop. The trail actually may be under
water for a short distance. You can drop down to the creek and follow the
base of the rock around or go up hill around the rocks and back down to the
trail. This trail takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to hike one way.
