Do you like to camp away from the crowd? If that's your idea of camping,
you'll want to read John E. Heasley's new guide, "Leaving the Crowds
Behind." This book covers the backcountry campsites of Rocky Mountain
National Park in Colorado. You get 180 pages of details, not simply a
list of campgrounds.
Heasley traveled over 700 miles of trails to research each of the 219
campsites. Some of the 120 camping locations are an easy hike from a trailhead,
including one that is wheelchair accessible. Other campsites require a
strenuous four- to five-hour hike. The most remote site requires a demanding
10-hour hike.
By using the trail information that Heasley provides, you can pick a route
that matches your backpacking ability. The book is profusely illustrated
with color photographs and maps. You get the feel of the backcountry campsites
merely by browsing the book.
Do you camp with children? Find out which campsites are safe for kids
and which are close to find a campsite compatible to your family. You
can use this information to plan a trip to a safer campsite.
Backpackers with experience in Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as
novices, will find that "Leaving the Crowds Behind" adds immensely
to their knowledge of backcountry campsites.
You learn, for example, which campsite has a 97% occupancy rate and which
one has a mere 6% rate. You'll also find out which campsites allow livestock,
such as horses or llamas.
If you are a backcountry enthusiast, a day hiker or just a casual park
visitor, you'll find this book brimming with interesting information.

Leaving the Crowds Behind: A Guide to Backcountry Camping In Rocky Mountain
National Park, by John E. Heasley ($24.95, RAS Publishing, Fort Collins).
Author Todd Hosman (see above) likes this guidebook so well he endorses
it in his book (about fishing in the park) as the best guide to camping
there. This colorful reference offers 135 maps, 210 photos and lots of
detailed hiking directions to backcountry campgrounds in the park. It
also explains the park's reservation system and how to get backcountry
permits and offers safety advisories and rules for backcountry camping.
The author, who lives in Fort Collins, hiked more than 700 miles of trails
to research the 219 campsites. Information: www.resourceanalysis.com or

Incidentally, the best book I've seen on backcountry camping in the Park
is Leaving The Crowds Behind, by John E. Heasley (RAS Publishing).
